After skipping 2021, Jaguar is sharpening the claws of its electric crossover. The 2022 Jaguar I-Pace is getting faster charging, new 3D cameras, a new infotainment system, and a simplified menu that gives you the top-spec model from 2020 for just $50 more than the base model from the same year.
The I-Pace won multiple awards in its first 2-years, but the electric vehicle landscape is shifting constantly and an over-the-air update isn’t always enough to keep pace. That means hardware and content updates like this one.
Smartphone-Inspired Infotainment
Heading up the list of new features is the Pivi Pro infotainment system Jaguar launched in 2020. The new system is meant to be more intuitive than Jaguar Land Rover’s older Touch Pro Duo system, making up to 90-percent of commonly accessed features no more than two button-presses away. It also offers the user a smartphone-like feel and an improved interface with faster response times. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are now included and the system lets users connect two phones at once through Bluetooth for multiple occupants or to avoid missing calls on a separate work phone.
Pivi Pro navigation can show the predicted state of charge at destinations and waypoints along the selected route, letting you know if you should make a charge stop before you get where you’re going. Alternatively, it can automatically add charging stations to the route as needed and will show users the estimated charge time required at each pit stop. Over the air software updates keep the maps and charging station data current.
Level 2 Charging Levels Up
At-home charging gets faster for the 2022 Jaguar I-Pace with the onboard 240-volt charging system upgraded from 7 kW to 11 kW. This lets the Jag take a full charge from empty (234-miles of range) in just 8.6-hours. The workday charging capability is a massive improvement over the 12.6-hours I-Pace required before. DC fast-charge speeds are the same, adding up to 63-miles of range in 15-minutes when plugged into a 100 kW charging station.
A new 3D Surround Camera is available that gives drivers a 360-degree view of the area around the I-Pace, making parking and maneuvering around obstacles easier. Jaguar has also added its ClearSight rearview mirror to the options list. The mirror displays a wide-angle image from a camera mounted in the rooftop antenna housing letting the driver “see” through passengers and cargo.
2022 Jaguar I-Pace Scratches Lower Level Trims
Dropping the S and SE trim levels and offering only the HSE trim ups the level of standard kit significantly. Sixteen-way heated and cooled front seats, premium LED headlights, powered tailgate, and an 825-watt 17-speaker Meridian 3D sound system are part of the new package. The Meridian system adds two speakers in the headliner for 2022 to enhance the soundstage for all passengers.
Upgrades to the climate control system have given the system PM2.5 filtration. PM2.5 filtration captures ultra-fine particles as tiny as 30-times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. Particles this small have been linked to health problems and the I-Pace will let you filter the cabin even before you step inside the vehicle to help keep them out of your air.
Driver Assistance Upgrades
Other new standard equipment for the 2022 Jaguar I-Pace includes Adaptive Cruise with steering assist and stop and go traffic assist, head-up display, emergency braking, blind-spot assist, lane keep assist, and traffic sign recognition. On the 2020 S trim, adding these assistance features would have required $4,700 in option packs.
If some of these changes sound familiar, it’s because many of them were announced last year for a 2021 model that didn’t go on sale in the U.S. Better late than never, and they are going to be here soon.
Shrinking the lineup has allowed Jaguar to shrink the price as well. The 2022 Jaguar I-Pace P400 will start from $69,900 before a $1,150 destination fee. That makes the window sticker just $50 more than the price of the previous S model and $11,000 less than the 2020 HSE. It will go on sale later this year.
