Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400: Factory All-Electric Dragster

Mustang’s Electrified Future is Fast!

Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 side profile
The battery-powered Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype is purpose-built and projected to deliver over 1,400 horsepower and over 1,100 ft.-lbs. of instant torque to demonstrate the capabilities of an electric powertrain in one of the most demanding race environments.

Ford just unveiled its first all-electric factory dragster prototype. The Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 is expected to eat up quarter-mile drag strips in the low-8-second range at over 170 MPH!

From becoming the world’s best selling sports car to running near-silent 8-second quarter-miles on the drag strip the pony car legacy shines bright! The fully-electric Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype is a one-off Ford Performance test mule. It gives us a glimpse of the insane straight-line performance that the latest in electric vehicle (EV) technology can provide.

Electric Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 Performance

While just a prototype at the moment, the Cobra Jet 1400 is displaying some pretty insane performance numbers. Ford expects this all-electric drag car to dispense of the quarter-mile in the low-8-second range at more than 170 MPH. It manages that impressive feat by delivering over 1,400-horsepower and over 1,110 foot-pounds of instant torque.

“This project was a challenge for all of us at Ford Performance, but a challenge we loved jumping into,” said Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “We saw the Cobra Jet 1400 project as an opportunity to start developing electric powertrains in a race car package that we already had a lot of experience with, so we had performance benchmarks we wanted to match and beat right now. This has been a fantastic project to work on, and we hope the first of many coming from our team at Ford Performance Motorsports.”

The Ford Mustang’s Electrified Future

The Ford Mustang is a legendary sports car with over 50-years of heritage. The Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype is just the latest Mustang to not so subtly hint at the pony car’s all-electric future. While that future might not involve making dino fuel go boom, it is still a focused performance-oriented future.

The 2020 Ford Mustang Mach-E SUV hits dealer lots later this year. It will be the first-ever all-electric vehicle with a Mustang badge at Ford dealerships. Will the Ford Performance Cobra Jet 1400 soon follow?

Mustang Cobra Jet

In the 1960s the original Mustang Cobra Jet dominated drag strips around the country. Even today the Cobra Jet factory drag cars are a major force in sportsman drag racing.

The Mustang muscle car legacy at the drag strip shines bright in the new Cobra Jet 1400 prototype. Although a much more quiet future, the Cobra Jet is just getting faster all the time.

While events aren’t happening right now, during the coronavirus epidemic, drag strips are likely to reopen before the end of the year. As soon as they do, Ford plans to show off this all-electric drag strip monster in front of racing fans,  media, and the competition alike.

Until then, we can all get a sneak peek of this machine on MotorTrend On Demand’s show “Hard Cell” this Sunday (April 26th). The show showcases electric vehicles pushing innovation boundaries, and the Ford Mustang Cobra Jet 1400 prototype undoubtedly does that.
