When you take weight out of a performance car, add sticky tires, and tune it properly it should liven up the driving experience even more. That combo is exactly what the 2021 Honda Civic Type R Limited Edition is all about. To prove that this new limited run hot-hatch means business Honda set a new front-wheel-drive track record at Suzuka Circuit, Honda’s Formula 1 racetrack in Japan, with a time of 2 minutes 23.993 seconds (with a Euro Spec car).

The Limited Editon car gets sticky Michelin Cup 2 tires wrapped around forged-aluminum alloy BBS wheels. These sporty wheels not only look good, but account for 18-pounds of reduced unsprung weight in the car. Weight-saving measures go even deeper with 28-pounds of sound deadening material being removed from the roof, rear hatch, front fenders, and dash. Taking the weight-saving measures even another step further is the removal of the cargo cover, rear heater ducts, and rear wiper mechanism. All in, the 2021 Civic Type R Limited Edition comes in 46-pounds lighter than the standard Type R, which still puts it just over 3,000-pounds.

Tuning of the Active Damper System and electronically assisted power steering has also been done to elevate the performance and account for the reduced weight, especially with the lighter wheels.

Same Civic Type R Goodness

Just like the 2021 standard Type R, you get an Alcantara wrapped steering wheel, weighted shift knob, and Honda Sensing suite of safety and driver-assistive technologies including Adaptive Cruise Control. Under the hood, the 2021 Civic Type R Limited Edition has all the same goodness found on the standard Type R. It gets a 2L turbocharged 4-cylinder VTEC engine putting out 306 hp and 295 lb.-ft. of torque. That power gets to the road through the front wheels via a 6-speed manual transmission and a limited-slip differential.
