The new 2022 Kia Stinger was unveiled today, showing off the new engine package and styling. Some dealerships already have them in stock and were even offering them for sale earlier this past weekend. But now that the public reveal has occurred and the embargo Kia placed on the info is up, we can tell you about the 2022 Kia Stinger.

Kia Stinger History

Kia debuted the Stinger with the 2018 model. Kia is partially owned by Hyundai, so no surprise the Kia Stinger is based on the Hyundai Genesis platform. Despite the sharp looks and the twin-turbo engines, the Stinger has never caught fire in America, with less than 13,000 being sold last year. Since it is slotted as a sport sedan, its competition ranges from the Audi A5 and the BMW 4 series, but with a lower price point.

“The Stinger confidently shows Kia’s ability to build a sport sedan that can compete – and beat – the best the world has to offer. It is definitive proof of our proud and evolving engineering prowess,” said Sean Yoon, president & CEO, Kia Motors North America and Kia Motors America. The latest new Kia Stinger is already offered to the public in Korea, but with a different engine package.

New For 2022 Kia Stinger

Those “geometric” wheels are a nice touch to the 2022 Kia Stinger GT-Line model

Of course, you would expect the new Kia logo to become part of the new Stinger and it did. But also easily noticeable are the new LED headlight pattern for the Stinger. Checking out the rearview shows a new lower valance, a full-width taillight with LED taillamps, and a larger, more aggressive exhaust opening. Don’t forget to check out the new geometric 18 and 19-inch wheels as well.

With the base Stinger GT-Line you still get a basic set of safety features; blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and parking distance reverse warning. You also only get a basic 7-inch touchscreen with Android and Apple CarPlay. Move up to the GT-2 and you will find a 10.25-inch touchscreen, additional safety assists (instead of just warnings), a sunroof, and a Harmon-Kardon sound system.

2022 Kia Stinger Engines

The stinger has a twin-turbo V6 and the newer iteration offers up three more horsepower to reach 368 hp, with 0-60 mph times of 4.7 seconds. Or you could opt for the new base 4-cylinder engine with 2.5-liters pumping out a more modest 300 hp.   The four-banger will go 0-60 mph in a sleek 5.2 seconds.

The cars come with an 8-speed automatic with five driving modes. Buyers have the choice of getting the Stinger as an all-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive. The 4-cylinder averages 25 combined mpg  in rear-wheel drive or 24 mpg in all-wheel drive, while the V6 3.3L only can eke out a combined 20 mpg with either drive train.

STINGER Safety Features

Like all new cars, there is a slew of safety features- Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) – that are offered by Kia.

  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Junction Turning: Assists the driver in braking to help prevent a collision or lessen the effects in certain conditions when turning left and an oncoming vehicle is approaching
  •  Safe Exit Warning: Can alert the driver or passengers opening their door not to exit the vehicle when the system detects approaching traffic. When detected, a chime sounds.
  •  Blind Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist: Under certain conditions, can detect vehicles traveling in the next lane. When a vehicle is “seen” in the blind spot, the vehicle brakes the outer wheel under certain conditions to help return the vehicle to its intended lane
  •  Rear Cross-Traffic Avoidance Assist: Helps detect most approaching cross-traffic when in reverse. When approaching cross-traffic is detected, the system alerts the driver and applies the brakes
  •  Navigation-based Smart Cruise Control: leverages the navigation system to lower the vehicle’s speed proactively before upcoming curves
  •  Lane Following Assist: Follows lane markings that the system detects and provides steering inputs to help maintain the vehicle in the center of the lane
  •  Highway Driving Assist: Uses federal highway speed limit information from the navigation system and, under certain conditions, will automatically adjust speed to be within the posted speed limit and maintain distance with the vehicle detected in front

The 10.25-inch touchscreen offers a safe view of navigation or other menu items for the driver.

They also offer through their UVO app:

  • Engine Idle Notification and Automatic Engine Shut Off notifies the driver via the UVO link app if the engine is left idling and, after a pre-selected time, turns off the engine
  • Rear Occupancy Alert can send push notification alerts via the UVO link app if some movement is detected inside the vehicle
  • 911 Connect and Roadside Assistance will automatically attempt to call 911 via the built-in UVO modem if an airbag deploys. For non-emergencies, it can connect with 24/7 roadside assistance and share the vehicle’s location

The UVO app also offers a “Find My Car” feature that shows the views of the Stinger’s cameras.

2022 Stinger Pricing

Technically the MSRP for the Kia Stinger was not announced, but thanks to those early dealership offerings we can tell you the prices.  The base Stinger GT-Line starts at $33,090 while the Stinger GT1 with the V6 engine goes for $43,690 and the Stinger GT2 jumps up to $51,290. They will later offer a high-performance Scorpion version as well.

If you need more seats for family and friends and want a Kia, we recently previewed the Kia Carnival as well.

The Korean-built Kia’s come with a 10 year, 100,000 miles limited powertrain warranty, and 5 year, 60,000 miles basic warranty, and roadside assistance. Given that some dealerships already have the 2022 Kia Stingers for sale, it should not be long until we can report back on a test drive.
