The internet responded with “that looks a lot like an FJ” as soon as the new GMC Hummer EV SUV was revealed. We for sure saw the resemblance, so had our Photoshop maestro Kurt Barclay put together a rendering of the Hummer EV SUV in FJ Cruiser clothing. We call this creation the ‘HummJ.’
It didn’t take all that much to make the new GMC Hummer EV SUV look like a modern Toyota FJ Cruiser. The body lines are so very similar on these two, you’d think GMC hired Toyota to do the design work. Of course, the two vehicles are from two different eras of the automobile, with two very different drive trains and two very different sizes.
Brothers From A Different Mother
Of course Toyota and GMC are very different companies and make very different vehicles. With that said, it seems to us that the first GM EV SUV took a lot of stylistic inspiration from the much loved Toyota FJ Cruiser. While Toyota continues to tease the return of their iconic offroader, GM is actually bringing us a similar-looking machine. Sadly the 2024 Hummer EV SUV won’t see dealer lots until at least early 2023, which is still a long way out! Maybe Toyota has something up its sleeve and can beat them to the punch.
Body Lines
The 2024 Hummer EV SUV’s fender lines and hood-bulges combined with the big front skid plate and floating roof line up impressively well with the FJ Cruiser’s styling. Add in a big blocky C-pillar and built-in rear door full-sized spare tire carrier and the similarities are uncanny.
Of course, the Hummer EV SUV doesn’t get the FJ’s suicide doors. On the flip side, the FJ never had removable tops like the Hummer EV SUV, although if it did it might have competed better against the Wrangler and not left the North American market.
Interior
The interiors of course very much show the many years between these vehicles and their target audiences. The FJ Cruiser was a much more budget-oriented machine than the new Hummer, but both interiors are blocky and try to look rugged. The Hummer does this with more rich quality materials and tech, while the FJ does this with lots of shiny plastic and rubber everywhere.
Very Different Go Juice
The big obvious difference in these vehicles is the powertrains. The 2o24 Hummer EV SUV has a next-generation all-electric drivetrain while the “old” FJ Cruiser has a traditional dino juice guzzling engine. Funny enough, the Hummer EV SUV beats the FJ Cruiser’s driving range by 46 miles, with a total 350-mile range. In today’s world, it is still much easier to find some dino juice at the pump than an EV fast charger though, especially in remote areas.
We’ll Call It Inflation
The new Hummer EV SUV is MASSIVE in comparison to the now considered quite small FJ Cruiser. The Toyota FJ Cruiser is 184″ L x 75″ W x 72″ H and the GMC Hummer EV SUV (what a mouthful!) is a whopping 206.7” L x 81.1” W x 93.7“ H. Yep, the new Hummer SUV is a BIG vehicle, at over 15-foot long and 6-foot wide, which is still a lot smaller than the original Humvee.
The Mighty HummJ
We probably could of called this mashup creation a lot of things, but ‘HummJ’ just rolls off the tongue nicely. Also, who wouldn’t want the reliability and quirkiness of a Toyota with the futuristic EV tech dropping soon on the GMC Hummer vehicles? We just hope someone brings back the off-road-focused SUV with suicide doors, because we like quirky features that provide bold visual elements and are super useful. Think loading the kid for soccer practice or the next big family overland adventure.
